Anortosit adalah batuan beku faneritik yang intrusif dan dicirikan dengan dominansi plagioklas felspar (90-100%) dan komponen mafik sedikit (0-10%). Piroksen, ilmenit, magnetit, dan olivin adalah mineral-mineral mafik yang paling sering hadir.
Anortosit di muka bumi dapat dibagi menjadi dua: Anortosit proterozoikum (disebut juga tipe masif anortosit) dan juga Anortosit tipe arkean. Kedua tipe ini memiliki keterjadian yang berbeda, dan muncul di periode-periode yang berbeda di sejarah bumi, dan diperkirakan memiliki asal yang berbeda.
Anortosit bulan merupakan area berwarna terang di permukaan bulan dan telah banyak diteliti oleh para ahli.
