Sejarah anime dimulai pada awal abad ke-20, ketika para pembuat film Jepang bereksperimen dengan teknik animasi yang dipakai di negara-negara Barat. Para animator generasi pertama pada akhir 1910-an meliputi Ōten Shimokawa, Jun'ichi Kōuchi dan Seitaro Kitayama, yang dijuluki sebagai "bapak-bapak" anime. Pada Perang Dunia II, film propaganda seperti Momotarō no Umiwashi (1943) dan Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei (1945) dibuat
