Film tersebut adalah sebuah tribut kepada pemain bisbol New York Yankees legendaris Lou Gehrig, yang wafat hanya setelah sebelum perilisannya, di usia 37 tahun, akibat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, yang kemudian menjadi dikenal oleh kaum awam dengan sebutan "penyakit Lou Gehrig".
