Sinopsis
Simba (Donald Glover) dan Nala (Beyoncé) dikaruniai anak singa perempuan bernama Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter). Suatu hari, Kiara harus ditinggal sementara oleh Simba dan Nala untuk melakukan prosesi persalinan di hutan. Ia lalu dijaga Rafiki (John Kani), Pumbaa (Seth Rogen), dan Timon (Billy Eichner). Kiara yang takut karena ditinggal orang tua berusaha ditenangkan sahabat-sahabat Simba. Rafiki lalu berinisiatif menuturkan sebuah cerita bersejarah tentang kakeknya, Mufasa (Aaron Pierre), sang raja Pride Lands. Cerita lantar beranjak kembali menuju puluhan tahun lalu, ketika Mufasa kecil menjadi anak singa kesayangan orang tuanya. Ia amat dekat dengan ayahnya, Masego (Keith David, dan sang ibu yang bernama Afia (Anika Noni Rose). Mereka lalu berencana untuk pergi ke Milele, sebuah wilayah yang digadang-gadang menjadi tempat tinggal terbaik bagi hewan di Bumi. Namun, sebelum melakukan perjalanan, Mufasa justru terpisah dengan orang tuanya akibat terbawa arus sungai yang begitu deras. Dia tersesat begitu jauh hingga tidak mengetahui keberadaan ayah ibunya. Mufasa kecil yang terapung di batang pohon tiba-tiba menghadapi ancaman besar akibat diburu buaya. Beruntung, seekor anak singa kecil lain bernama Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) menemukan keberadaannya. Mereka berdua lalu menjadi akrab, bahkan Taka ingin menjadikan Mufasa saudara laki-lakinya. Keinginan itu sempat ditolak Obasi (Lennie James), ayah Taka sekaligus pemimpin salah satu kawanan singa, tetapi akhirnya diizinkan setelah melewati banyak perdebatan. Cerita kemudian berlanjut menampilkan lika-liku hubungan Mufasa dan Taka. Mufasa hadir sebagai seekor singa cemerlang dan pemberani, sementara Taka yang disiapkan menjadi raja justru kalah pamor hingga mulai merasa iri hati. Sebuah peristiwa memaksa Mufasa dan Taka pergi berkelana berdua menuju Milele. Perjalanan itu menjadi awal hubungan pelik keduanya sekaligus pertemuan Mufasa dengan Rafiki, Sarabi, dan Zazu.
