The AD-5 was significantly widened, allowing two crew to sit side-by-side (this was not the first multiple-crew variant, the AD-1Q being a two-seater and the AD-3N a three-seater); it also came in a four-seat night-attack version, the AD-5N.

Mar 10, 2024 · The Douglas AD-5 Skyraider was designed as a two-place, single-engine, antisubmarine warfare aircraft. A low-wing monoplane with conventional landing gear, it has folding wings for storage aboard aircraft carriers.

Originally conceived as a replacement for the Navy's Dauntless dive-bomber, the Skyraider was the direct result of what the Navy learned in the Pacific. They wanted a carrier based, single-engine airplane that could carry a monstrous load of ordnance.
The designation AD-5 was used instead for a December 1949 proposal for an aircraft which would combine the antisubmarine hunter-killer role in a single airframe and with side-by-side seating for two crew members.
Cruised almost exclusively on USS Essex CV-9. First cruise was a combo MED-Suez Canal-WESTPAC. Departed Mayport in Jan 58 and returned in Nov 58. Trained as a AEW radar operator for 2nd and 3rd cruises. Great challenge and fun flying off the old CVs. The AD-5W was a real workhorse.
The AD-5 like Hank Avery's was a deliberate attempt to take what was already a tremendously useful airplane to far higher levels of utility. In fact, the AD-5 and its variants have been pointed out as one of the most utilitarian combat airplanes ever built.
