Cogito ergo sum adalah sebuah ungkapan yang diutarakan oleh Descartes, sang filsuf ternama dari Prancis. Artinya adalah: "aku berpikir maka aku ada". Maksudnya kalimat ini membuktikan bahwa satu-satunya hal yang pasti di dunia ini adalah keberadaan seseorang sendiri. Keberadaan ini bisa dibuktikan dengan fakta bahwa ia bisa berpikir sendiri.
Jika dijelaskan, kalimat "cogito ergo sum" berarti sebagai berikut: Descartes ingin mencari kebenaran dengan pertama-tama meragukan semua hal. Ia meragukan keberadaan benda-benda di sekelilingnya. Ia bahkan meragukan keberadaan dirinya sendiri.
Descartes berpikir bahwa dengan cara meragukan semua hal termasuk dirinya sendiri tersebut, dia telah membersihkan dirinya dari segala prasangka yang mungkin menuntunnya ke jalan yang salah. Ia takut bahwa mungkin saja berpikir sebenarnya tidak membawanya menuju kebenaran. Mungkin saja bahwa pikiran manusia pada hakikatnya tidak membawa manusia kepada kebenaran, tetapi sebaliknya membawanya kepada kesalahan. Pada artinya, ada semacam kekuatan tertentu yang lebih besar dari dirinya yang mengontrol pikirannya dan selalu mengarahkan pikirannya ke jalan yang salah.
Sampai di sini, Descartes tiba-tiba sadar bahwa bagaimanapun pikiran mengarahkan dirinya kepada kesalahan, tetapi ia tetaplah berpikir. Inilah satu-satunya yang jelas, inilah satu-satunya yang tidak mungkin salah. Maksudnya, tak mungkin kekuatan tadi membuat kalimat "ketika berpikir, sayalah yang berpikir" salah. Dengan demikian, Descartes sampai pada kesimpulan bahwa ketika ia berpikir, maka ia ada atau dalam bahasa Latin: COGITO ERGO SUM, aku berpikir maka aku ada.
