Jan 22, 2014 · It was a terrific and solid little camera, especially good when fitted with the Yashica ML 21mm f3.5 lens, one of the best of all 21mm optics at that time. I still have a Contax 137MD and the 28mm f2.8 Yashica ML lens (another very fine optic, despite its so-called amateur standing), which has a motor transport and automatic exposure.

Contax I cameras generally get a bad rap concerning reliability, but the Version 5 to 7 actually aren't that bad. The shutter straps wear and break, but the same can be said for the Contax II (and Leicas).

However, by the time I was ready, the 159 was available -- an utterly magnificent camera and an easy choice over the 139. Mar 5, 2018 · The Contax 645 system was top-notch, with lenses that improved upon prior Zeiss Hasselblad versions (esp the superb Contax 120mm Makro Planar, still one of the finest lenses ever made). Unfortunately it was never as popular as Hasselblad in the studio, which is where digital first took over.

Jan 8, 2024 · That feature and the removable back are the camera's best features. The worst is the horrible shutter setting and notchy shutter operation. If all the functions of an actual Contax camera with its body and lens in good condtion matched the focusing I experienced, a real Contax could be a great camera.
