Dinky line (or simply "Dinky") is a nickname sometimes used to describe a short railroad line, usually operated with short trains. The term may come from "dinkey", which is "a small locomotive for hauling cars, shunting, etc. in a railroad yard" and is driven by "Rail Yard Engineers, Dinkey Operators, and Hostlers".

The Ames and College Railway, a steam train line from 1891 through 1907 linking Ames, Iowa, with Iowa Agricultural College
The B&O Main Line around Sykesville, Maryland, called both the "Dinkey" and the "Dinky."
Chicago and Tomah Railroad in Wisconsin, later a branch of the C&NW. Particularly the section between Fennimore and Woodman which was retained as a narrow gauge operation until its closure.

H. & H. Railroad, the "shortest railroad in the world", connected Stanwood and East Stanwood, Washington.
Mount Airy and Eastern Railroad was a narrow gauge (3-foot) railroad connecting Mount Airy, North Carolina, with Kibler Valley in Patrick County, Virginia, from 1899 to 1918, a distance of 19.25 miles along the Ararat River. A quarry line joined at "the Junction" near Riverside Drive.

At just under a mile, the Dinky Line Trail runs between Orlando's downtown urban core and Loch Haven Park—home to art museums, performing arts theatres, and a science center. The Dinky Line got its name from the narrow-gauge tracks of the Orlando and Winter Park Railway, which used to run between the two towns.

This is the tale of the Princeton Branch Railroad - a historic rail line linking Princeton and West Windsor, Also known as "Princeton Junction and Back" or the "Dinky," it has been cherished by many generations, ferrying everyone from ordinary folk to President Woodrow Wilson. It's also the shortest passenger rail line in the country.
The Dinky Line made eight round-trips per day and charged fifteen cents a ride. Students from Rollins College nicknamed the railroad the Dinky Line. By 1891, the Dinky Line extended to Oviedo.
Princeton residents feared losing their connection to the transit system and successfully advocated for a new, dedicated line. It would become the Princeton Junction & Back (PJ & B). This was the Dinky, one of the shortest commuter rail lines in the country - and a point of pride for our community.
