    Hilal adalah bulan sabit muda pertama yang dapat dilihat setelah terjadinya konjungsi (ijtimak, bulan baru) pada arah dekat matahari terbenam yang menjadi acuan permulaan bulan dalam kalender Islam. Biasanya hilal diamati pada hari ke-29 dari bulan Islam untuk menentukan apakah hari berikutnya sudah terjadi pergantian bulan atau belum. Hilal juga merupakan bagian dari fase–fase bulan.


    Penentuan Hilal Syawal


    Penentuan hilal bulan Syawal adalah salah satu aktivitas penting yang dilakukan lembaga hisab untuk menentukan hari terakhir pada bulan Ramadan. Hal ini akan menentukan kapan ummat muslim terakhir melakukan puasa dan merayakan Idul Fitri. Metode penentuan hilal yang biasa dilakukan ada dua macam yakni metode hisab dan rukyat.

    Metode pandangan mata. Secara bahasa rukyat berasal dari bahasa arab ra'a (رَأَى) yaitu melihat dengan mata dan mengamati. Umumnya rukyat dilakukan dengan mata kepala, sedangkan dalam istilah astronomi rukyat disebut observasi. Secara istilah rukyat dalam penentuan awal bulan Hijriyah adalah melihat hilal dengan mata telanjang atau dengan menggunakan alat yang dilakukan setiap akhir bulan atau tanggal 29 bulan Qamariyah pada saat matahari terbenam.

    Metode perhitungan matematik astronomi yang biasanya dilakukan oleh Muhammadiyah. Secara bahasa hisab berasal dari bahasa arab al hisab (الْحِسَاب) yang artinya bilangan atau hitungan. Secara istilah hisab dalam penentuan awal bulan Qamariyah yaitu suatu metode penentuan awal bulan Qamariyah yang didasarkan dengan perhitungan benda-benda langit yaitu Bumi, bulan dan matahari.
