Ritual adalah istilah umum yang merujuk kepada rangkaian kegiatan berupa gerakan, nyanyian, doa, dan bacaan, menggunakan perlengkapan, baik dilakukan secara sendirian maupun bersama-sama, dipimpin oleh seseorang. Ritual dilaksanakan dalam rangka menjalin hubungan secara transendental dengan sesuatu yang dianggap sebagai Yang Maha Kuasa. Biasanya, ritual terangkai dalam berbagai bentuk simbolis di dalam pelaksanaannya dan juga memiliki stratifikasi sifat kesakralan/keseriusan dalam pengertian di dalam kelompok tertentu. Dalam hal ini karena ritual sendiri sering kali dilakukan secara repetitive maupun sesekali saja pada perayaan di kelompok tertentu. Maka ritual dapat dikatakan sebagai sebuah kegiatan yang hanya dapat dimaknai secara serius ataupun biasa saja. Secara pelaksanaannya semua dilakukan berdasarkan rules tertentu, pada pengertian tradisional dapat dikatakan mempunyai nilai dan sifat yang merujuk pada bentuk yang sakral dan kaku, biasanya di dalam masyarakat atau kelompok tradisional memiliki ciri relasi vertikal dan ilahiah. Namun dalam pengertian modern ritual dapat berupa sebuah kegiatan yang dilakukan untuk mendapatkan orientasi horizontal tertentu, tanpa harus terhubung dengan relasi vertikal ke-ilahiah-an itu.
