Karakter fiksi Superman, telah muncul di berbagai film hampir sejak awal. Dia memulai debutnya di bioskop dalam serangkaian film animasi pendek yang dimulai pada tahun 1941, dan kemudian membintangi dua serial film pada tahun 1948 dan 1950. Sebuah studio independen, Lippert Pictures, merilis film fitur Superman pertama, Superman and the Mole Men, yang dibintangi George Reeves, pada tahun 1951. Ilya dan Alexander Salkind dan Pierre Spengler membeli hak film Superman pada tahun 1974.
Setelah banyak naskah, Richard Donner disewa untuk mengarahkan film, pembuatan film Superman (1978) dan Superman II (1980) secara bersamaan. Donner sudah menembak delapan puluh persen dari Superman II dengan Christopher Reeve sebelum diputuskan untuk menyelesaikan syuting film pertama.
