    Watson lahir di Columbus, Georgia. Dia lulus dari Sprayberry High School pada 2004. Di akhir tahun itu, dia mulai belajar psikologi dan filosofi di Furman University di Greenville, Karolina Selatan. Dia lulus magister di psikologi dan sarjana di filosofi.

    Saat kuliah di Universitas Furman, Watson mulai berlatih untuk berkarier di gulat profesional dan pada tahun 2005 ia mulai bergulat paruh waktu dengan promotor Ultimate Christian Wrestling milik Rob Adonis. Saat berada di Dewan Gulat Dunia yang berbasis di Greenville, Carolina Selatan, ia mengembangkan Austin Creed gimmick, yang sangat didasarkan pada karakter Apollo Creed dari seri Rocky.
    Selama waktunya di NWA Anarchy, Creed adalah bagian dari tag tim bernama Awesome Attraction dengan Hayden Young. Pada tanggal 12 Juli 2007, Creed mengalahkan Murder-One di final turnamen untuk memenangkan DSW Heavyweight Championship, menjadi pegulat pertama yang memegang gelar tersebut saat perusahaan tidak berafiliasi dengan WWE; perusahaan bubar pada tanggal 11 Oktober, menjadikan Creed DSW Heavyweight Champion terakhir.
