SCIS (disambiguation)
/sci/ is the science and mathematics board on 4chan, an English-language imageboard. Created in 2010, it is dedicated to the discussion of scientific and mathematical topics, including physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.
History
The board was created on January 25, 2010, as a dedicated space for discussing STEM topics.
Notable contributions
= The Haruhi Problem
=In 2011, /sci/ made a significant contribution to mathematics through what became known as "The Haruhi Problem." On September 26, 2011, an anonymous user posted a question about the shortest possible way to watch all viewing orders of the anime series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in nonchronological order. Another anonymous user responded with a mathematical proof demonstrating that it would require watching at least 93,884,313,611 episodes to see all possible orderings.
The proof went unnoticed by the mathematical community for seven years until it was recognized as a partial solution to a superpermutations problem that had remained unsolved for 25 years. Mathematician Greg Egan later published a proof inspired by the anonymous user's work, with both proofs now considered significant advances in the field of superpermutations.
