Anthony Miranda (born April 8, 1961) is an American police officer and New York City Sheriff. He was appointed in 2022 by Mayor Eric Adams. Miranda previously served as a sergeant and detective in the New York City Police Department. After retiring from the Police Department, he co-founded and served as the executive chairman of the National Latino Officers Association. Miranda has been associated with some scandals and controversies, including a campaign-finance irregularity, the promotion of a "virus buster" badge during the COVID-19 pandemic, affiliations with New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate (who has had a number of legal problems). and concerns on directing donations to National Latino Officers Association with donors having potential violations ignored, the improper seizure of cash during cannabis raids, and improper use of city resources.
Miranda ran for Queens Borough President in 2020, but dropped out of the race after coming in fourth place in the Democratic primary. The following year, Miranda ran to represent District 20 in the New York City Council, but ranked 5th in the primary and did not proceed. During his 2021 campaign for New York City sheriff, Miranda personally loaned his campaign $11,000, which it repaid with $1,320 in interest, sparking some controversy.
