- Source: Bardilo
Bardilo is an Old Germanic given name and surname. It was first attested during the Early Middle Ages, written in The Teutonic Name-System Applied To The Family Names of France, England, & Germany. The name was then borrowed and transliterated all over Europe, specifically in present-day Albania, Belarus, France, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, and United Kingdom.
Etymology
There are multiple meanings behind the name in different etymologies.
The Proto-Germanic prefix, *bard, literally means beard or axe and the suffix,-ilo, is an instrumental case of *-ilaz, which forms a noun specifically of tools.
Formed a derivative (Bardilaz) as if referring to a bearded warrior who used an axe as his weapon. It is likely that the warrior was named Bardil.
Possibly referring to the Illyrians who used axes in warfare, and their king Bardylis (Albanian: Bardhyl "bright star").
Other spellings, like Barzil and its derivatives, ultimately come from present-day Israel and are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Barzillai, a Gileadite from Rogelim, was a biblical figure in the Torah mentioned in the Second Book of Samuel.
