"Image" is a song by American duo Magdalena Bay from their second album, Imaginal Disk (2024). It was released through Mom + Pop Music on July 10, 2024, as the album's second single. Both members of the band, Matthew Lewin and Mica Tenenbaum, wrote and produced the song. It is a disco track with bass guitar. A music video for "Image", directed by Amanda Kramer, premiered alongside the song.
Music critics received "Image" positively, noting similarities between the Tenenbaum's vocal affectations and Canadian musician Grimes, who was cited by Magdalena Bay as an inspiration for their early work. A remix version with Grimes was released on October 29, 2024. Magdalena Bay performed "Image" at their late-night show debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on the following day.
Release
Following the release of the single "Death & Romance", Magdalena Bay announced their second album Imaginal Disk and released its second single, "Image", through the Mom + Pop Music record label. In a statement regarding the track, the duo shared: "Close your eyes. Imagine a brand new, better you. Now wait 22 minutes. Now open your eyes. Meet your brand new image! Isn't it amazing that the meat in our heads can do this?". On October 29, 2024, they shared a remix to "Image" with Canadian musician Grimes, who inspired the beginnings of the band members' musical career.
Composition and reception
"Image" was written and produced by both members of Magdalena Bay, Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin. A disco track, it contains a 4/4 kick drum and haunted vocals from Tenenbaum. Eric Bennett from Paste noted similarities with the vocal affectations of Grimes. Flood Magazine's Will Schube stated that it sounds "like [it] emanated from an alien spaceship", and the bass and snare slaps "give the chorus a biting edge". Writing for The Line of Best Fit, Matthew Kim opined that, as in other songs on Imaginal Disk, the instrumentals match the lyricism vibe, praising the "crunchiness" of the final chorus of the track. Magazine Under the Radar named "Image" the best song of its release week. In a review for Stereogum, critic Abby Jones described the track as both futuristic and nostalgic, beginning "as a mellower, vaporwave-meets-pop diva jam, until a delightfully blown-out bass crashes into the final chorus". Evan Sawdey for Spin said that the song "showed the group still could make spacey bangers if they wanted to".
Music video
Amanda Kramer directed the music video for "Image". It is a continuation of the video to "Death & Romance", which found True, a character played by Tenenbaum, getting an "imaginal disk" upgrade inserted into her forehead. The "Image" video "goes back in time to the waiting room where True stood by for her first fitting". Glitter Magazine's Lily Hart said that it "is a perfect example of the group's unique aesthetics".
Live performances
Magdalena Bay performed "Image" on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on October 30, 2024, marking their late-night show debut. The band transferred the "mystical imagery" from the music video to the stage, with Tenenbaum wearing the same outfit and singing in front of a mirror-like video screen from their live concerts.

An image song or character song is a song on a tie-in single or album (often called an image album or character album) for an anime, game, dorama, manga, or commercial product that is sometimes sung by the voice actor or actor of a character, in character with harmonies. It is meant to give a sense of the personality of the character.
Character songs are considered an important part of an anime or dorama's success, as they often provide insights to a character that may otherwise go unexplored on the program itself. The series' creators may also include details about a particular character's design stages and evolution, and on occasion even design sketches so fans can see for themselves how a character changed. There may also be comments from the voice actors or actors on how they feel about playing their characters. Sometimes character songs are incorporated into the anime itself, such as Kyōran Kazoku Nikki, which has each of its main characters sing a character song as the ending theme, each with its own animation. Another example is Prince of Tennis, which has the openings and ending songs for the OVA episodes sung by characters in the anime.
Character songs are not restricted to anime protagonists. Antagonists such as Zechs Merquise, Master Asia, Sailor Galaxia, Vegeta, and some villains (such as Devimon and Sōsuke Aizen) also have their own character songs. In some cases, these are regarded as more interesting than those of the protagonists as they often provide the only glimpse into a villain's character.
In addition, fans are known to buy character song albums based solely on the voice actor or actor. An example of this is Megumi Hayashibara, a well-known voice actress who has released many CDs and albums over her career, including character songs of her characters.
The first anime character song album to reach No. 1 in the Japanese Oricon weekly charts is Hōkago Tea Time (放課後ティータイム, After School Tea Time), performed by the characters from K-On! in 2009, debuting at No. 1 with sales of 67,000 copies in its first week. The K-On! characters later became the first anime image group to reach No. 1 in the Oricon singles chart in 2010, with the opening theme for the second season of the show, "Go! Go! Maniac!", which debuted at No. 1 with sales of over 83,000 copies in its first week.
Character version
A related sub-type is a character version, where a voice actor or actor sings a song from the series as the character. A famous example of this are the various versions of Neon Genesis Evangelion's theme songs, redone by the voice actresses of Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu and Misato Katsuragi. They are usually identified by a version tag at the end of the name (e.g. "Cruel Angel's Thesis, Ayanami Version").
Character song
Similarly, a character song can also be a song about a character, but not necessarily sung by the character's portrayer. For example, while Mazinger Z includes songs about Kouji Kabuto and his friends, they are not sung by their voice actors. Nevertheless, they still provide some insight into the character's persona.
In the Pokémon anime, Dawn and Serena's image song were not sung by their voice actors originally either, although later introduced their voice actors' version.
