  • The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. Adopted in 1971, it entered into force in 1975 and, as of December 2024, there are 172 contracting parties. In Italy, as enacted by DPR 13 marzo 1976, n. 448 (and the subsequent DPR 11 febbraio 1987, n. 184), there are 57 Ramsar sites as of December 2024, with a total surface area of 739.82 square kilometres (285.65 sq mi).
