Ramanathan Archchuna is a Sri Lankan Tamil politician and is a medical practitioner whose services had been suspended by the Ministry of Health for 'irregular conduct'. He was elected to the 17th Sri Lankan Parliament from Jaffna Electoral District as an Independent candidate.
Career
He served as the Acting Medical Superintendent (MS) of Chavakachcheri Base Hospital and was later promoted as the Medical Superintendent of Chavakachcheri Base Hospital on a permanent contact basis. In July 2024, he made headlines for exposing the irregularities and malpractices that occurred at the Base Hospital Chavakachcheri through the social media platforms. He eventually rose to prominence and was hailed as a stalwart by the public in Northern Province for facilitating to bring a much needed system change to streamline the smooth operational workflow at hospitals in across Sri Lanka.
In November 2024, he contested the 2024 Sri Lankan parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Jaffna District and was subsequently elected as the member of parliament from Jaffna.
Controversies
On 21 November 2024, a video featuring Dr. Ramanathan sparked widespread debate on social media platforms. The footage showed him occupying the seat reserved for the Leader of the Opposition during the inaugural session of the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka. Despite multiple requests from parliamentary staff to vacate the seat, Dr. Ramanathan refused to comply, which led to intense criticism online.
Following the incident, a group of civil society activists lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) requesting an investigation into certain controversial comments made by Dr. Ramanathan in a video posted on Facebook. The remarks and his behavior became a focal point of discussion in Sri Lankan media and online communities.
