Criminal Background
Shamsul Haque Tuku, the former Deputy Speaker of Bangladesh, was involved in a murder case that led to his arrest along with former State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and the general secretary of Dhaka University Chhatra League, Tanvir Hasan Saikat.
On August 15, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rashidul Alam granted a 10-day remand for the accused to facilitate a proper investigation into the case. The police had requested the remand after presenting the accused in court, stating the need for further inquiry.
The individuals were arrested on the night of August 14 while hiding in the Nikunja residential area of the Khilkhet police station. They were subsequently taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office in Dhaka.
The murder case stems from the shooting of rickshaw puller Kamal Mia, aged 39, on July 19 in the Paltan police station area during the quota movement. The victim's wife, Fatema Khatun, filed a murder case on July 20 at the Paltan police station, naming unidentified perpetrators.
