    • Sharmin Ali (born 8 August 1988) is an Indian actress, writer, and entrepreneur.


      Early life and education


      Sharmin Ali was born in West Bengal, India. She completed her schooling at Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram. In childhood Sharmin spoke with a stammer, which in later life she learned to manage. She graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from HKBK College of Engineering, Bangalore.


      Career


      After completing her degree, Sharmin worked for a consulting firm but quit to become a writer. She self-published a free e-book YOU (You Own Urself), on the subject of getting to know oneself. She later launched YOUR-FIRST-BOOK, which provided training and guidance for aspiring writers. Sharmin additionally started a theatre production house, ART-RIGHT-IS.
      Ali founded Bengaluru-based AI startup Instoried, which completed an $8 million funding round in 2021. However, as of 2024, the company's website was offline and most of its employees had left the company. Investors have accused Ali of making overambitious projections of their investment returns; in response, Ali has threatened to sue for defamation.

      Sharmin Ali's first performance on stage was at the Alliance française, Bangalore. With ART-RIGHT-IS she gathered a group of amateurs, professionals, and theatre enthusiasts to form the Artrightis Theatre Group. Its shows include Potli Baba Ki Paltan and EREBUS- Darkness Personified.

      Plays


      Potli Baba Ki Paltan was the first of Ali's four productions in 2014 staged at Rangoli Arts Center, Bangalore. A combination of gurus and shishyas appeared on stage under the direction of a group of first-time and expert directors.
      EREBUS- Darkness Personified, also at the Rangoli Arts Centre, was based on Greek mythology portraying several shades of the God Erebus who personifies darkness. The show was described as "An orgasm that lasts for 70 minutes: Self-Hedonism and Paranoia!”.
      The Penis Monologues, written by American Jason Cassidy and adapted for Indian audiences, explores male attitudes towards sex, women, violence, emotional insecurities and what it's like to have a penis. As the rehearsals began, three directors joined Ali in directing the monologues.
      Aurora, a collection of short plays, was staged at Alliance francaise de Bangalore.
      Chutzpah premiered at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Bangalore, in 2015.The characters in this 90-minute musical satire written by Ali are women who have broken free from their inhibitions and defied the stereotype. A group of activists took offence to the play's title, having misunderstood it as a vulgar word in Hindi.
