Shounak Roy (born December 2006) is an Indian classical sarod player. He is the youngest disciple of Buddhadev Das Gupta (Padma Bhushan Awardee). Shounak is at ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata under Sri Abir Hossain.
Achievements and awards
Roy had been felicitated by the Governor of Tripura, Shri Indrasena Reddy Nallu for his performance in the Hanuman Jayanti festival at Swami Dhananjoy Das Kathia Baba Mission College.
Roy is amongst the 50 young talented musicians selected nationwide in India to receive Sri Shanmukhananda Bharat Ratna M. S. Subbulakshmi fellowship in music from Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha.
Roy is a recipient of the Telegraph Online Edugraph 18 under 18 Award – 2024 from the Telegraph online Edugraph for achievements in the field of art and culture, given to 18 candidates from different disciplines across Eastern India.
Roy won the Telegraph School Awards for Excellence - Anirban Sinha Award in 2023, where he was honoured with a gold medal for his outstanding talent in Indian classical music, specifically in the instrumental category of sarod.
Shounak Roy set Indian and Asian records in 2024 for playing non-stop musical string instrument - sarod for the longest duration of 4 hrs 45 mins and 31 secs covering 32 different ragas of Indian classical music.
Roy has also won the Doverlane Music Conference Talent Search Contest – 2023 and the Swara Samrat festival. He was first at the All India Music Competition, KBR Bimalarpan Sangeet Mahotsav (Chattisgarh) - Sanyogita 2021 organised by Team Bhilai Anthem and Welfare Society Bhilai in the name of Acharya Bimalendu Mukherjee.
Notable performances
Shounak has performed sarod in various national and international platforms including KBR Bimalarpan Sangeet Mahotsav organised by Team Bhilai Anthem and Welfare Society in association with the Steel Authority of India Limited - Bhilai Steel Plant, Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh and South-Central Zone Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Roy performed on the sarod at the Bay Area Music Circle in Berkeley, Cal., the Andaz e Mejaaj, the Friday Evening Ragas-Viewcy International, the Telegraph 18 Under 18 Awards Ceremony, Kishalay – Sangeet Piyasi in Kolkata, at X-Uberance 23 at St. Xavier's Collegiate School in Kolkata, Basant Ki Bahar concert organized by SwarDarbar and at the Vistar Music Conference. He also took part in the documentary Swabhiman Bharat by Network-18, CNN News-18.
