Singapore Tonight is a Singapore English long-running main flagship daily television news bulletin programme CNA. It runs daily from 22:00 until 23:00 SGT/HKT (21:00 until 22:00 WIB/BKK) on weekdays and 22:00 until 22:30 SGT/HKT (21:00 until 21:30 WIB/BKK) on weekends and public holidays, providing a round-up of all the day's events around Singapore, as well as coverage of breaking news and occasional global stories that are relevant to Singaporeans. The highly rated programme is currently presented mainly by Syahida Othman on weekdays, and Jill Neubronner on weekends.
History
Up until early July 2008, the show was aired live only in Singapore, with a replay available internationally at 00:00 until 00:30 SGT/HKT (01:00 until 01:30 WIB/BKK). In addition, a few segments of the show are available on the international edition of Asian Home News at 22:30 until 23:00 SGT/HKT (22:30 until 00:00 WIB/BKK) and 10:30 until 11:00 SGT/HKT (11:30 until 12:00 WIB/BKK).
From 31 March 2014, the programme was expanded to 1 hour to incorporate the Singapore Business segment (previously aired as Business Singapore / Singapore Business Tonight at 22:30 (GMT+8)) and features two main anchors, Steven Chia and Dawn Tan. John Leong replaced Steven Chia on a permanent basis from 7 November 2014.
From then on until end–2018, the bulletin was mainly helmed by John Leong and Dawn Tan, with Steve Lai and Glenda Chong occasionally stepping in as relief presenters. During this time, Jill Neubronner started to be a mainstay, helming Singapore Tonight every weekend.
In 2019–2021, the bulletin was frequently helmed by rotating presenters Steve Lai, Glenda Chong and Dawn Tan, with John Leong stepping back from regular presenting duties to become the Supervising Editor in Singapore Desk and therefore serving as an occasional presenter instead. Long time presenter Glenda Chong ended her regular appearances for Singapore Tonight on 16 October 2020 to become the main presenter for Channel 5's main News Bulletin News Tonight, leaving Steve Lai and Dawn Tan to serve as the 2 main presenters. Business presenter Elizabeth Neo was also added to the bulletin in during that period to helm the Business segment.
On 18 November 2021, long time presenter Steve Lai ended his appearances on Singapore Tonight and began the following week with Asia First. Loke Wei Sue took his place. Hence, the weekday telecasts were mainly presented by Loke Wei Sue and Dawn Tan on weekdays, with the bulletin’s weekend presenter, Jill Neubronner and former Asia Now presenter (currently the main presenter of East Asia Tonight), Otelli Edwards occasionally fronting the bulletin as relief presenters in the absence of either of the main presenter. Main Business presenter Elizabeth Neo also ended her appearances on Singapore Tonight on 31 March 2023 and joined Steve Lai with Asia First starting on the week of 17 April 2023. Her place has since been replaced by either one of the main presenters, or occasionally Roland Lim.
With effect from 15 April 2024, weekdays telecast have been downsized from two presenters to one, with the show being presented solely by Dawn Tan, whose appearance on Asia Tonight have also ended concurrently with the changing bulletin arrangements. Loke Wei Sue in contrast, became the sole presenter for Asia Tonight and therefore serving as one of the relief presenter for Singapore Tonight instead. Other relief presenters on weekdays include Jill Neubronner & Glenda Chong. However, with effect from July 2024, Syahida Othman has since taken over the main presenter role from Dawn Tan on weekdays as Dawn Tan had stepped back from presenting duties to serve as a Supervising Editor. Meanwhile, Jill Neubronner herself remained as the main presenter on Weekends, with Angela Lim stepping in as relief presenter on weekends since March 2024 and Poh Kok Ing also stepping in as a relief presenter on weekends since October 2024.
Singapore Tonight is one of only two main English national newscasts available in Singapore; the other being Channel 5's News Tonight.
