The Push from the Bush: A Bulletin of Social History, was a journal devoted to early colonial Australian social history.
It was the first journal in Australia to call itself a journal of social history.
26 editions were printed under the title "The Push from the Bush" between May, 1978, and April 1988. Another four editions were printed between 1989 and 1992 under the title "The Push".
Topics covered included:
Settlement, contact and race relations
Colonisation
Government policy of the period
Protectionism
Social conditions of the time
The Founding editors were Alan Atkinson and Marian Quartly.
Others editors included John Knott and Norma Townsend.
The journal was initially created as a way to involve historians in the creation of Australia 1838, the second volume in the ten volume work Australians: a historical library, which was created by the Australian historical profession as a contribution to the Bicentenary of European colonisation. After Australians 1838 was completed in 1984, the journal became independent of the project.
