Background and release
"Trust Issues" was one of the four tracks taken from Drake's 2011 studio album, Take Care, released via his October's Very Own blog as standalone cuts and were formerly unavailable on music streaming services. Written by Drake, Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Nikhil Seetharam, Rick Ross, N. Cobey and its producers T-Minus and Noah "40" Shebib, "Trust Issues" was originally released on June 21, 2011, as a free download to promote Take Care. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Drake stated that "Headlines" and "Marvins Room" made the album cut, but "Trust Issues" and "Dreams Money Can Buy" did not, as they were reserved for the birthday edition.
On August 1, 2019, Drake took to Instagram to announce the release of his first compilation album, Care Package. "Trust Issues" was released in tandem with Care Package through OVO Sound on August 2, 2019, roughly six months after the re-release of Drake's breakout mixtape, So Far Gone (2009), and two days before his eighth annual OVO Fest held in Toronto. According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), "Trust Issues" was released in the United Kingdom on June 8, 2014, through Harlem King Entertainment.
Music and lyrics
"Trust Issues" is 4 minutes and 41 seconds long. It is the fourth song on Care Package and it was produced, mixed and mastered by Noah Shebib, as well as guitars played by Adrian Eccleston. The song contains a smooth and down tempo sample from "I'm on One".
"Trust Issues" is an R&B song that examines the suffering and ambiguity that result from negotiating the complexities of interpersonal relationships. Chris Coplan of Consequence described it as "half confessional, half ode to drank", and Singersroom described stated that it intensifies to a powerful conclusion as Drake's vocals soar above the energetic arrangement. Writing for The Edge, George Townsend wrote that "Trust Issues" is a slow, melodic, atmospheric track on which Drake's likeness to the Weeknd is undoubted. Opening with interpolation from "I'm on One", Drake is heard singing "All I care about is money and the city that I'm from", echoing his own hook. He tells a story on how his loved ones turned against him and betrayed him, leading him to down his problems with liquor, purple lean to be specific, he then questions the loyalty of people around him.
Chart performance
In the United States, "Trust Issues" entered and peaked at number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the chart dated August 17, 2019. It went on to peak at number 22 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and number 16 on the Rolling Stone Top 100 charts. In his native Canada, the song peaked at number 63 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number 35 on the UK R&B Chart, and number 90 on the UK Streaming Chart. "Trust Issues" was awarded silver certification in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), and platinum certification in Australia by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).
Other versions
Four days after Drake released "Trust Issues" on his October's Very Own blog, a remix by Canadian singer the Weeknd was posted on the same blog on June 25, 2011. On June 29, 2011, a mashup by Gizzle was posted on the OVO blog; a blending of Drake's version and the Weeknd's version of "Trust Issues". Later that year on August 28, Canadian singer Justin Bieber released his cover version of the song, but intentionally left out the profanity as he was 17 years old at that time.
