The 614th Tank Destroyer Battalion was a tank destroyer battalion of the United States Army active during the Second World War. The unit was activated in 1942 and trained through the late summer of 1944.
Reorganized as a towed battalion in May 1943. Arrived in England on 7 September, 1944, landed at Utah beachhead beginning 8 October. Deployed to Metz and supported operations against the Siegfried Line nearby in November and December. Shifted to Hagenau Forest area.
The African American 614th Tank Destroyer Battalion earned a Presidential Unit Citation for its heroic stand in France in December 1944, and a Medal of Honor in 1980 posthumously awarded to Major Charles Thomas.
The 614th Tank Destroyers were to prove themselves mighty fine soldiers, good men to have around when there was a bit of fighting going on, but as sailors the members were dismal failures. With the 761st Tankers as shipmates, the battalion had a dull, uneventful voyage to England, landing at Avonmouth, near Bristol, on Sept. 7.
