Jul 23, 2022 · Decided to refinish the wood and brass on my Agfa Ansco 8x10. It is a Universal model dating from before WW2, based on some information quoted from Richard Knoppow on Phot.net. Bought the camera from a young man that inherited it from his grandfather who was evidently a school photographer back in the day.

The lenses originally came off $10,000 stat cameras. I have a 185mm Repromaster f9.0 that Steve Grimes mounted in a Copal 1 and it is a great moderate wideangle for 8x10. Eskofot Ultragon is another of several names for these lenses - thus I think Agfa contracted with a German lensmaker for the "Repromasters" rather than creating in-house.

The 135mm Solinar was on the Agfa Isolar 9x12 cameras, it was the top lens, usually in a Compur. As some Isolar cameras were rebadged ICA's it's quite likely the Solinar is also re-badged, most likely a Tessar. Bruce, the shutter (assuming it is a Compur) will have a serial number and that should tell you the approx age of the lens. Ian

Agfa Ansco's are better made than Deardorff's etc and were regarded as the very best of all the US made pre-WWII LF cameras. I'd gently wipe the bellows with a damp cloth to clean them, the Unniversal's bellows aren't as good as those on the Commercials I reglued mine last November.

I have an Agfa Ansco 8X10 Wood Bed Field camera and can list the movements. The front standard has geared rise, center axis tilt and lateral shift. The rear standard provides generous tilt ability and a very useful amount of swing. The bed has an integral extension rail. The extension rail allows the camera to expand to 30 inches.

The standard finish was polished Cherry and Bronze-Gilt metalwork. The "Deluxe" finish is aluminum-gray with bright nickel plated metalwork and red bellows. Post war cameras seem to have a darker wood finish than earlier ones. Agfa and Ansco made some cheaper models, there is a "portrait" camera with a fixed front and shorter bellows extension.

I used an Agfa Duoscan model T2500 many years ago and it was an excellent scanner. My recollection is that it was called a Duo not because of the ability to scan without glass but because of the dual-lens capability that gave resolution of 1250 ppi optical at full coverage, and 2500 ppi optical at a smaller size.

If you're talking about one of the big Agfa process cameras with a couple of Repromaster lenses I paid U.K. £20-00 (about $40-00) for one about a year ago. It was massive and was loaded into my van on a pallette. The lenses are superb but difficult to shutter. If you are really technical you might be able to use the vaccum holder.
