    Sir Alexander Fleming (6 Agustus 1881 – 11 Maret 1955) adalah ilmuwan Skotlandia yang berhasil menemukan penisilin, yaitu sejenis antibiotik yang dihasilkan oleh jamur Penicillium notatum. Zat temuannya ini dapat digunakan untuk membunuh banyak jenis bakteri yang berbahaya bagi tubuh manusia.
    Bersama dengan Ernst Chain dan Howard Florey, Baron Florey menerima Hadiah Nobel Fisiologi atau Kedokteran 1945.


    Biografi


    Alexander Fleming lahir pada 6 Agustus 1881 di daerah pertanian Lochfield, dekat Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotlandia. Ia adalah anak ketiga dari empat bersaudara dari pasangan Hugh Fleming (1816–1888) dan Grace Stirling Morton (1848–1928). Ayahnya meninggal ketika ia masih berumur tujuh tahun. Ia bersekolah di Loudoun Moor School dan Darvel School. Selanjutnya ia mendapat beasiswa selama dua tahun di Kilmarnock Academy, sebelum pindah ke London. Di London ia bersekolah di the Royal Polytechnic Institution. Mengikuti saran dari sepupunya, pada tahun 1903, setelah empat tahun bekerja di kantor pelayaran, ia mendaftar di sekolah medis; St Mary's Hospital Medical School di Paddington. Ia lulus dengan MBBS degree pada tahun 1906
    Pada tanggal 11 Maret 1955, Fleming meninggal di rumahnya di London akibat serangan jantung. Jenazahnya dimakamkan di Katedral Santo Paulus.
