Almaty (sebelumnya bernama Alma Ata) merupakan kota terbesar di Kazakhstan. Penduduknya berjumlah 1.200.000 jiwa (2005). Kota ini pernah menjadi ibu kota Kazakhstan sebelum dipindah ke Astana. Kota ini, selama menjadi ibu kota Kazakhstan pernah menjadi kota tujuan akses kereta api dari Beijing, ibu kota Republik Rakyat Tiongkok. Kota ini hanya selama beberapa tahun saja menjadi ibu kota Kazakhstan sebelum digantikan Astana.
