An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations adalah judul lengkap dari buku karangan Adam Smith, ekonom berkebangsaan Skotlandia. Buku ini diterbitkan pada tanggal 9 Maret 1776, dan biasanya dikenal sebagai The Wealth of Nations saja. Dari judulnya sendiri, buku itu memberikan gambaran tentang bangsa-bangsa, khusunya di Eropa, yang kaya-kaya dan sejahtera, yang mana buku itu menjelaskan apa yang menjadi sumber kekayaan bangsa-bangsa. Pandangan orang pada masa itu adalah bahwa uang emas dan logam mulia yang menjadi sumber kekayaan bangsa-bangsa. Pandangan tersebut diruntuhkan oleh karya Adam Smith ini. Kekayaan bangsa-bangsa ditentukan oleh jumlah seluruh nilai produksi barang dan jasa yang dapat diperjual-belikan (yang kemudian kita kenal dengan Produk Domestik Bruto. Dari pernyataan tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa negara yang punya sedikit emas tetapi sangat produktif adalah negara yang lebih kaya dalam jangka panjang daripada negara yang punya banyak emas tetapi tidak produktif. Disamping itu, buku ini jelas sekali menggambarkan tentang politik ekonomi yang terjadi pada awal revolusi industri, dan diperkirakan menjadi buku teori ekonomi modern pertama yang mendapat sambutan luas di Inggris Raya, yaitu tempatnya pertama kali diterbitkan . Boleh dikatakan buku ini terbit pada masa yang tepat, karena langsung mendapatkan lahan praktik yang subur berkat revolusi industri di Inggris raya pada masa itu. Teori yang dikebangkan dalam buku ini juga menjadi semacam landasan dari kebijakan teori pasar bebas, karena di dalamnya dikemukakan bahwa peran campur tangan pemerintah dalam perkonomian harus dibatasi. Pembatasannya itu sedemikian rupa sehingga perekonomian berjalan dengan dikendalikan oleh tangan-tangan tak kelihatan (menurut istilah Adam Smith) yang tak lain adalah mekanisme tarikan permintaan dan penawaran yang sering disebut mekanisme pasar. Buku ini dipecah dalam 5 buku yang terbagi menjadi 2 jilid.

Pada bab pertama Adam smith membahas tentang bagaimana cara bangsa bangsa yang barbar akhirnya mengenal cara bekerjasama dan akhirnya melakukan diferensiasi pekerjaan,menurut adam smith uang bukanlah sumber pertukaran yang sejati melainkan tenaga manusia lah yang menjadi sumber pertukaran yang sejati.
