Aorta adalah arteri terbesar dalam badan manusia. Bersumber dari bilik kiri jantung dan membawa darah beroksigen kepada semua bagian tubuh dalam peredaran sistemik.

Bagian awal aorta, aorta menaik, muncul keluar dari ventrikel kiri, yang diasingkan oleh katup aorta. Kedua arteri coronaria jantung bercabang dari pangkal aorta, di atas katup aorta.

Bentuk yang paling umum ialah cabang aorta membentuk truncus celiacus, arteri mesenterica superior, dan juga arteri mesenterica inferior. Arteri renalis biasanya bercabang dari aorta abdominalis di antara truncus celiacus dan arteri mesenterica superior.
Aorta berakhir dengan percabangan 2, yaitu arteri iliaca communis sinistra dan arteri iliaca communis dextra untuk memasok darah ke anggota tubuh bagian bawah dan pelvis.
Ciri-ciri
Aorta adalah arteri elastis, oleh karenanya maka dapat mengembang. Apabila ventrikel kiri berkontraksi untuk memaksa darah mengalir ke aorta, aorta mengembang. Regangan ini memberikan energi potensial yang akan membantu mempertahankan tekanan darah sewaktu diastole, karena saat itu, aorta akan berkontraksi secara pasif.
