    Pada 16 Desember 2009, Studio Ghibli mengumumkan bahwa Karigurashi no Arrietty merupakan film yang akan mereka produksi tahun mendatang. Film ini diangkat dari novel berjudul The Borrowers karya penulis Inggris, Mary Norton. Novel ini sendiri pernah memenangi penghargaan Carnegie Medal untuk cerita anak-anak, pada tahun 1953, dan pernah diadaptasi ke dalam dua film dan serial televisi. Pendiri Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata dan Hayao Miyazaki mempersiapkan sebuah film adaptasi dari novel ini sekitar 40 tahun.
    Sutradara film ini mengumumkan bahwa animas film akan ditangani oleh Hiromasa Yonebayashi. Hiromasa Yonebayashi merupakan salah satu animator yang bekerja untuk Studio Ghibli dalam proyek film Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, dan Spirited Away. Dia juga pernah menjadi pengarah untuk film Tales from Earthsea. Miyazaki diberitakan bahwa dia akan bertindak sebagai perencana produksi.
