Asmara adalah ibu kota Eritrea dengan populasi ±579.000 jiwa. Mayoritas industrinya adalah tekstil dan pakaian, daging proses, bir, sepatu dan keramik.
Asmara terletak di 15°20' utara dan 38°55' timur (15.333, 38.91667).
Sejarah
Pada masa lampau, Asmara terdiri dari empat desa kecil yang berdiri pada awal abad ke-12 sebagai pusat dagang dan kemudian menjadi pusat administratif regional Ethiopia, Ras Alula.
Lalu daerah ini dijajah oleh Italia pada tahun 1889 dan menjadi ibu kota Eritrea pada tahun 1897. Pada akhir 1930-an, Italia mengubah struktur kota ini dengan struktur kota yang berbeda dan bangunan-bangunan baru; Asmara kemudian dinamakan 'Piccola Roma' (Miniatur Roma). Bahkan kini sebagian besar bangunan-bangunan besar merupakan bangunan peninggalan Italia dan banyak pertokoan yang masih menggunakan nama Italia (Contohnya: "Bar Vittoria", "Pasticceria moderna", "Casa del formaggio", "Ferramenta")..
Semasa perang kemerdekaan Eritrea dari Ethiopia, bandar udara di Asmara menjadi lokasi konflik utama. Bandara tersebut juga digunakan oleh Ethiopia untuk menerima pasokan persenjataan dari pendukung asing. Asmara menjadi kota terakhir yang dibebaskan oleh Front Pembebasan Rakyat Eritrea (EPLF), mulai diduduki pada tahun 1990 dan diserahkan tanpa perlawanan dari tentara Ethiopia pada pada 24 Mei 1991.
