BAE Systems plc LSE: BA merupakan perusahaan yang bergerak dalam bidang penerbangan dan bermarkas di Farnborough, Inggris. Perusahaan ini didirikan tahun 1999 dan mempekerjakan 100.100 pekerja pada tahun 2005.
Sejarah
= Asal Usul
=BAE Systems dibentuk pada tanggal 30 November 1999 dari hasil penggabungan antara British Aerospace (BAe) dan Marconi Electronic Systems (MES), senilai £7.7 milliar. Sebagai hasilnya, BAE Systems merupakan suksesor dari beberapa perusahaan terkemuka asal Inggris. Perusahaan pendahulu BAE pernah memproduksi Comet, pesawat jet komersial pertama di dunia, Harrier, pesawat jet pertama di dunia yang dapat melakukan lepas landas ataupun mendarat secara vertikal, radar Blue Vixen yang ada di dalam BAE Sea Harrier (yang menjadi dasar dari pengembangan radar CAPTOR di dalam pesawat Eurofighter), dan juga memproduksi pesawat supersonik Concorde, bersama dengan Aérospatiale.
British Aerospace (BAe) adalah produsen pesawat sipil maupun pesawat militer, dan juga produsen peralatan pertahanan darat. BAe dibentuk pada tanggal 29 April 1977 dari nasionalisasi dan penggabungan beberapa produsen pesawat yang telah ada sejak Perang Dunia II, yakni British Aircraft Corporation (BAC), Hawker Siddeley Group, dan Scottish Aviation. Di mana BAC dan Hawker Siddeley awalnya juga dibentuk dari hasil penggabungan maupun akuisisi.
Sedangkan Marconi Electronic Systems (MES) adalah divisi pertahanan milik General Electric Company (GEC), yang sebagian besar bisnisnya berurusan dengan sistem pertahanan laut maupun udara. MES berawal dari Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company yang didirikan oleh Guglielmo Marconi pada tahun 1897. GEC lalu membeli English Electric (yang juga termasuk Marconi) pada tahun 1968 dan selanjutnya menggunakan merek Marconi untuk bisnis pertahanannya sebagai GEC-Marconi, yang lalu berganti nama menjadi Marconi Electronic Systems. Sedangkan GEC berawal sejak Perang Dunia I, dan berkontribusi terhadap upaya perang, seperti memproduksi radio dan lampu, dan yang paling fenomenal, penemuan teknologi magnetron untuk meningkatkan deteksi radar. Antara tahun 1945 dan 1999, GEC-Marconi menjadi salah satu kontraktor pertahanan paling penting di dunia. GEC juga mengakuisisi beberapa perusahaan sejenis, seperti Associated Electrical Industries pada tahun 1967, Yarrow Shipbuilders pada tahun 1985, Plessey pada tahun 1989, divisi pertahanan dari Ferranti pada tahun 1990, dan Kværner Govan pada tahun 1999. Pada bulan Juni 1998, MES mengakuisisi Tracor, salah satu kontraktor pertahanan asal Amerika Serikat, seharga £830 juta.
