Guernsey adalah sebuah dependensi mahkota Britania Raya yang berstatus Bailiwick (semacam daerah kekuasaan) di lepas pesisir Normandia.
Selain pulau Guernsey, Bailiwick Guernsey juga mencakup pulau Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, Brecqhou, Burhou dan pulau-pulau kecil lainnya. Bailiwick Guernsey bersama dengan Bailiwick Jersey membentuk Kepulauan Channel.
Sejarah
Wilayah Guernsey terbentuk ketika permukaan air laut pasang. Saat itu, Guernsey terletak di ujung semenanjung yang menonjol di Selat Inggris. Pada 6000 SM, Guernsey beserta tanjung-tanjung di sekitarnya terpisah dari benua Eropa dan menjadi kepulauan. Pada masa neolitik itu, petani-petani bermukim di pesisir dan menciptakan berbagai dolmen dan menhir. Di Pulau Guernsey terdapat tiga menhir yang unik dari segi arkelologi.
Ajaran Kristen diperkenalkan pertama kali di Guernsey oleh Santo Samson Dol.
Guernsey dikuasai oleh Duchy Brittany hingga tahun 933 tatkala Duchy Normandia menganeksasinya. Kepulauan Channel (termasuk Guernsey) merupakan sisa terakhir Duchy Normandia pada zaman pertengahan. Gelar tradisional Elizabeth II sebagai kepala negara di Guernsey adalah Duke Normandia.
Bailiwick Guernsey diduduki oleh pasukan Jerman pada Perang Dunia II. Banyak penduduk Guernsey yang dikirim ke kamp-kamp di bagian barat daya Jerman.
Geografi
Luas wilayah Bailiwick Guernsey ialah 78 km² dengan garis pantai sepanjang 50 km. Lihou, sebuah pulau air pasang, terhubung dengan Guernsey oleh jembatan buatan ketika air laut surut. Sebagian besar permukaan wilayah Guernsey datar.
