Basilides adalah tokoh golongan Gnostik, walaupun ia seorang Kristen. Balisides mengajar di Alexandria pada abad ke 2 sampai abad ke 4. Basilides berpengaruh pada masa pemerintahan Hadrianus dan Antonius Pius.
Ajaran Basilides tentang Allah bahwa pada mulanya tidak ada Tuhan, yang ada hanya Tuhan Tertinggi. Basilides memahami Allah yang super-eksistensi, tetapi tidak bereksistensi atau Allah yang absolut. Maka pembaptisan Yesus adalah bagian dari makhluk rohani bukan pada kelahiran Yesus. Pemikiran Balisides menekankan Allah melahirkan nous atau pengertian dan dari nous lahirlah makhluk rohani mulai dari Logos - Pronesis - Sophia - Dinamis - Eirene. Makhluk rohani tersebut kemudian menciptakan lapisan langit sampai mencapai 365 lapisan. Lapisan-lapisan tersebut dikuasai oleh roh-roh|roh dan malaikat.
