BBC Three adalah saluran televisi yang diluncurkan tanggal 9 Februari 2003 dan dioperasikan oleh BBC. BBC Three merupakan pengganti BBC Choice dengan khalayak sasaran pemirsa berusia antara 16 hingga 34 tahun yang menggunakan teknologi dan peralatan baru.
Acara BBC Three juga sama dengan TV BBC lainnya di Inggris, diproduksi sendiri atau tayang simultan dengan BBC News.




Sejarah



Pada akhir 2001, BBC memutuskan untuk mereposisi dan mengubah citra dua saluran digital mereka yang telah kukuh, BBC One dan BBC Two, supaya lebih terikat. Rencana awalnya adalah mengganti nama BBC Knowledge menjadi BBC Four dan BBC Choice menjadi BBC Three. Penggantian BBC Knowledge menjadi BBC Choice diwujudkan pada 2002. Tetapi, untuk BBC Three, muncul pertanyaan mengenai format barunya. Ada anggapan bahwa format baru tersebut terlalu mirip dengan saluran saingan-saingan BBC, seperti ITV2 dan E4, dan hal itu tidak diperlukan. Pada akhirnya BBC Three terus dilanjutkan dan diluncurkan pada 9 Februari 2003. Saluran itu diluncurkan oleh Stuart Murphy, yang sebelumnya menjalankan BBC Choice.
Tanggal 12 Mei 2011, BBC Three ditambahkan pada Sky EPG di Republik Irlandia pada saluran 229. Kemudian pada 3 Juli 2012 BBC Three dipindahkan ke saluran 210, untuk menambah ruang bagi saluran-saluran baru.
Selama berlangsungnya Olimpiade Musim Panas 2012, BBC Three menambah jam tayangnya menjadi 24 jam untuk liputan tambahan perhelatan olahraga tersebut. Penambahan jam siaran juga dilakukan pada Pesta Olahraga Persemakmuran 2014. Tanggal 16 Juli 2013 BBC mengumumkan bahwa siaran simultan BBC Three resolusi tinggi (HD) akan diluncurkan pada 2014. Realisasinya lebih cepat, layanan tersebut diluncurkan pada 10 Desember 2013.

Bulan Februari 2014, Direktur Umum BBC, Tony Hall, mengumumkan bahwa BBC harus melakukan pemotongan anggaran 100 juta pound sterling. Hall mengancam untuk menutup salah satu layanan televisinya sebagai penghematan biaya. Tanggal 5 Maret 2014, Hall mengumumkan usulan untuk menjadikan BBC Three sebagai layanan hanya daring, dengan pemotongan anggaran program hampir 50% cut to its programming budget
BBC Three resmi berhenti pada pagi 16 Februari 2016. Acara terakhirnya adalah sebuah episode Gavin & Stacey. Saluran itu kemudian memberikan informasi promosi mengenai layanan internet BBC Three hingga kemudian dihentikan sepenuhnya.
