    Grylls lahir di Donaghadee, County Down, Irlandia Utara. Ia dibesarkan di Donaghadee sampai usia empat tahun, keluarganya pindah ke Bembridge di Isle of Wight.
    Grylls merupakan anak dari politikus konservatif Sir Michael Grylls, yang terlibat dalam cash-for-questions affair, dan Sarah, Lady Grylls. Lady Grylls adalah anak perempuan dari politikus Patricia Ford, yang merupakan Anggota Parlemen dari Partai Serikat Ulster, pemain kriket dan pebisnis Neville Ford.
