Bedivere ( atau ; bahasa Wales: Bedwyr; bahasa Prancis: Bédoier) adalah salah satu anggota pertama dari Matter of Britain, muncul di sejumlah teks Wales awal dimana ia digambarkan sebagai Bedwyr Bedrydant. Dalam versi modern, dia menjabat sebagai perwiranya Raja Arthur dan sering dikaitkan dengan Sir Kay. Sir Lucan adalah saudaranya sedangkan Griflet adalah sepupunya.




Tradisi awal


Dalam karya-karya Wales awal, Bedwyr Bedrydant ("Bedwyr of the Perfect Sinew") adalah seorang ksatria tampan dan ksatria dibawah Perintah Arthur. Bedivere hanya memiliki satu tangan setelah kehilangan salah satu tangannya dalam sebuah pertempuran. Ayahnya diketahui bernama Pedrawd atau Bedrawd, dan anak-anaknya adalah Amhren dan Eneuawg, keduanya anggota istana Arthur.
Salah satu referensi langsung Bedwyr paling awal dapat ditemukan di puisi Pa gur dari abad ke-10 yang menceritakan eksploitasi sejumlah ksatria Arthur, termasuk Bedwyr, Cei dan Manawydan. Dari Bedwyr, narasi tersebut adalah:

Versi abad ke-9 dari Englynion y Beddau ("The Stanzas of the Graves") memberikan petunjuk tempat peristirahatan terakhir Bedwyr di Tryfan. Bedwyr adalah tokoh penting dalam kisah Culhwch dan Olwen, dimana ia muncul di daftar teratas anggota istana Arthur bersama temannya Cei dan digambarkan sebagai pria paling tampan di dunia (selain Arthur dan Drych fab Cibddar), dan seorang pemegang tombak sihir.




Tradisi kemudian


Dia merupakan salah satu sekutu setia Arthur di Historia Regum Britanniae karangan Geoffrey of Monmouth, dan tetap demikian dalam banyak literatur Arthur. Dia membantu Arthur dan Kay bertarung melawan raksasa di Mont-Saint-Michel dan bekerjasama dengan Arthur dalam perang melawan Kaisar Lucius Tiberius dari Roma.
Dalam beberapa versi bahasa Inggris tentang kematian Arthur, termasuk dalam Le Morte d'Arthur karya Thomas Malory, Aliteratif Morte Arthure dan Stanzaik Morte Arthur, Bedivere dan Arthur termasuk di antara beberapa korban selamat dari Pertempuran Camlann. Setelah pertempuran itu, atas permintaan raja yang terluka parah, Bedivere melempar Excalibur kembali ke Lady of the Lake. Namun, dia melakukan ini setelah dua kali berpikir kalau pedang itu terlalu berharga bagi Inggris untuk dibuang ke danau begitu saja. Ketika dia memberi tahu bahwa tidak ada hal aneh yang terjadi, Raja Arthur pun menasihatinya, karena Arthur tahu bahwa pedang mistik itu akan menciptakan kejadian supranatural. Akhirnya, Sir Bedivere memasukkan pedang itu ke dalam air, dimana sebuah tangan tiba-tiba muncul dan menangkap pedang itu di tengah udara, lalu masuk kembali ke air. Arthur pun yakin bahwa pedang telah dikembalikan dengan benar.
Setelah kematian Arthur, Bedivere menghabiskan sisa hidupnya dengan bertapa.
