    Belgae ( atau ) adalah sebuah konfederasi besar suku-suku yang tinggal di Galia utara semenjak abad ke-3 SM. Wilayah mereka terletak di antara Selat Inggris, tepi barat Sungai Rhein, dan tepi utara Sungei Seine. Keberadaan mereka dijelaskan secara rinci oleh Julius Caesar dalam catatan perangnya di Galia. Beberapa suku di Britania juga dijuluki Belgae dan O'Rahilly menyamakan mereka dengan Fir Bolg di Irlandia. Belgae merupakan asal nama provinsi Romawi Gallia Belgica dan juga negara Belgia modern.


    Asal usul


    Julius Caesar mendeskripsikan Galia pada saat ia melancarkan penaklukannya (58–51 SM) sebagai sebuah wilayah yang terbagi menjadi tiga bagian, yaitu wilayah yang dihuni oleh Aquitani di barat daya, oleh orang-orang Galia di bagian tengah yang terbesar (yang disebut Celtae dalam bahasa mereka sendiri), dan Belgae di utara. Masing-masing wilayah memiliki adat, hukum, dan bahasa yang berbeda. Menurut Caesar, Belgae merupakan "yang paling berani di antara ketiganya, terletak paling jauh dari peradaban Provinsi Romawi yang sangat maju, paling jarang dikunjungi pedagang-pedagang, dan paling dekat dengan orang-orang Jerman di seberang Sungai Rhein yang sering terlibat perang dengannya". Walaupun Caesar mendeskripsikan Belgae sebagai suku yang terpisah dari orang-orang Galia, Strabo menulis bahwa perbedaan antara orang-orang Kelt (Galia) dengan Belgia dalam hal pembawaan, bahasa, politik, dan gaya hidup tidaklah besar, tidak seperti perbedaan antara orang-orang Aquitania dengan Kelt.
