Berthold Brecht (10 Februari 1898 – 14 Agustus 1956) adalah seorang penyair dan penulis naskah drama yang berasal dari Jerman yang menuntut ilmu di bidang alam. Ia lahir di Augsburg pada tahun 1898. Ayahnya merupakan seorang direktur di sebuah perusahaan kertas.
Pada saat Nazi berkuasa di Jerman, Brecht melakukan perlawanan dalam hal pemikiran untuk menentang ideologi Nazi. Akan tetapi, Karena dia diawasi oleh Gestapo, ia melarikan diri ke Amerika Serikat. Pada akhir Perang Dunia II, Brecht kembali ke Jerman dan tinggal disana sampai akhir hayat hidupnya.
Kehidupan Pribadi
Pada 1922, ia mengawini aktris Marianne Zoff setelah sebelumnya memiliki seorang anak lelaki di luar nikah bernama Frank akibat affair singkatnya dengan seorang gadis. Pada 1930, buku-buku pementasannya dinyatakan terlarang oleh penguasa Jerman. Ia diasingkan ke Denmark, lalu ke Finlandia. Ia kemudian pindah ke Rusia, lalu Amerika Serikat. Dalam pengasingannya di Amerika Serikat, dia menulis sebuah skenario untuk Hollywood, Hangmen Also DIe (1942). Di sana, ia sempat dituduh melakukan kampanye anti-Amerika, tetapi berhasil bebas dan pergi ke Swiss. Setelah lima belas tahun dalam pengasingan, pada 1938 ia kembali ke Jerman, lalu tinggal setahun di Zurich untuk menulis buku teori teaternya, A Little Organum for the Theatre. Pada tahun 1949 dia hijrah ke Berlin yang pada saat itu menjad ibu kota Jerman Timur. Di sana ia mendirikan sebuah teater Marxis, Berliner Ensemble. Istri keduanya, Helene Weigel, yang dikawininya pada 1928, menjadi aktris utama dan sutradara.
Pada 1950, ia akhirnya menjadi warga negara Austria. Baik di Jerman Barat maupun Timur, namanya populer sebagai seorang penyair kontemporer, sejajar dengan para penyair klasik seperti Schiller dan Goethe. Pada 1955,Brecht menerima Hadiah Stalin. Setahun kemudian ia wafat di Berlin Timur.
Karya-Karyanya
Brecht mulai menulis puisi sejak remaja. Puisi pertamanya dipublikasikan pada 1914. Tiga tahun kemudian Brecht masuk jurusan kedokteran di Universitas Ludwig, Maximilian, Munich, tapi keluar pada 1921. Selama Revolusi Bavaria pada 1918, Brecht menulis lakon pertamanya, Baal, yang dipentaskan pada 1923. Drama yang merayakan gairah hidup dan seksualitas itu meraih sukses besar. Sebelumnya, ia telah meraih sukses melalui lakon Trammein in der Nacht (1922) dan berlanjut dengan Die Dreigroschenoper.
Bersama Hans Eisler ia membuat sebuah film politik, Kuhle Wompe, yang diberi judul berdasarkan sebuah tempat di Berlin di mana para pengangguran hidup menderita. Film itu beredar pada 1932 dan segera dilarang oleh pemerintah Jerman. Sebuah drama politiknya, Die Massnahme (1930), mencerminkan kelugasan dan antisentimentalitas. Dalam lakon itu seorang komunis dibunuh oleh partainya, sebuah simbul simpati terhadap kaum miskin dan penderitaannya.Moral cerita itu adalah bawah kebebasan individu harus ditekan di masa kini demi kebebasan di masa depan.
Brecht sempat berurusan dengan pemerintah komunis Jerman Timur walaupun ia juga menulis sejumlah prosa untuk menyenangkan lembaga sensor. Dalam sajak-sajaknya, secara kritis ia menyatakan kecurigaannya pada rezim komunis. "Zaman apakah ini, ketika bicara tentang pohon dianggap kejahatan," tulisnya dalam sebuah puisi.
Dalam lakonnya, Brecht lebih mendoorng para penonton untuk berpikir ketimbang terlibat dalam cerita dan mengenali tokoh-tokohnya. Dalam proses ii ia menggunakan efek alienasi. Brecht membangun sebuah bentuk drama yang disebut teater epik di mana gagasan atau ajaran didaktik berperan penting. Karya-karyanya telah diterjemahkan setidaknya ke dalam empat puluh dua bahasa di seluruh dunia, termasuk bahasa Indonesia. Karya Brecht dalam terjemahan bahasa Indonesia antara lain lakon Mencari Keadlian (majalah Budaya Jaya, Oktober 1971, terjemahan W.S. Rendra), cerpen Prajurit dari La Ciotat (majalah sastra Horison, Juli-Agustus 1993, terjemahan Gentong HAS), dan Kumpulan Ceritan Tentang Tuan Keuner (Balai Pustaka, 2000, terjemahan Dewi Noviami).
