Bookends adalah album studio keempat Simon & Garfunkel yang dirilis pada tanggal 3 April 1968 oleh Columbia Records. Album ini diproduseri oleh Paul Simon, Roy Halee, dan Art Garfunkel.
Lagu pada sisi pertama dikonsep secara khusus mengeksplorasi perjalanan kehidupan manusia, mulai dari masa kanak-kanak sampai tua. Kemudian, pada sisi kedua berisi lagu-lagu yang dijadikan soundtrack The Graduate.
Bookends adalah hit nomor satu di tangga lagu pop Billboard Amerika Utara maupun Britania Raya. Empat singel yang masuk antara lain A Hazy Shade of Winter, At the Zoo, Fakin’ it dan Mrs Robinson yang masing-masing di urutan 13, 16, 23 dan 1.
Pada tahun 2003, jaringan TV VH1 menganugerahi Bookends sebagai album terbaik ke-93 sepanjang masa. Pada tahun 2003, diberi peringkat ke-233 oleh majalah Rolling Stone sebagai salah satu dari 500 album terbaik sepanjang masa.
Rilis
Ini adalah album Simon dan Garfunkel terakhir yang dirilis dalam mono maupun stereo. Versi mono dicetak dalam kuantitas terbatas dan dianggap sebagai koleksi langka oleh para kolektor. Lagu ini dirilis dalam kompilasi CD tahun 1999, The Best of Simon and Garfunkel.
Album ini juga dirilis dalam seri CD MFSL Ultradisc.
Lagu-lagu
Album dimulai dengan lagu Bookends Theme yang mengalun lembut, tetapi perlahan menjadi berat dengan track kedua Save the Life of My Child yang mempergunakan suara synthesizer yang terdistorsi dan merupakan departure dari suara yang lebih lembut. Ini merupakan ciri khas Simon & Garfunkel. Save the Life of My Child juga memperdengarkan beberapa sampel dari singel The Sounds of Silence dan memasukkan suara bass synthesizer yang secara personal dilakukan oleh Bob Moog. Album ini juga memasukkan singel Mrs Robinson yang dijadikan soundtrack The Graduate.
Overs, Punky’s Dilemma, dan A Hazy Shade of Winter juga ditulis oleh Paul Simon untuk soundtrack The Graduate, tetapi produser film menolaknya. Simon & Garfunkel menghabiskan waktu 50 jam dalam di studio untuk merekam Punky’s Dilemma.
America adalah lagu yang menceritakan tentang pencarian tempat dimana seseorang bisa diterima, kemudian lagu Overs yang menyuarakan tentang "pengucilan". Lagu Voice of Old People menyampaikan pesan tentang penuaan yang menghantui, lalu lagu Old Friends yang ditutup kembali dengan Bookends Theme, seolah-olah sebagai "bookend" (penyangga buku) pada bagian akhir.
Pada tahun 2001, album ini dirilis kembali dalam format CD yang memasukkan dua bonus track: You Don’t Know Where Your Interest Lies (awalnya dirilis sebagai sisi-B singel Fakin’ It) dan sebuah versi demon Old Friends.
Bookends Theme diperdengarkan saat pembukaan film Girl, Interrupted dan Bookends dalam penghabisan film 500 days of Summer.
