    Burgtheater, awalnya dikenal dengan nama K.K. Theater an der Burg, dan kemudian dengan nama K.K. Hofburgtheater hingga tahun 1918, adalah teater nasional Austria yang terletak di kota Wina dan merupakan salah satu teater berbahasa Jerman paling penting di dunia.
    Burgtheater didirikan pada tahun 1741 dan dijuluki "die Burg" oleh warga Wina.


    Sejarah



    Teater ini dibuka pada tanggal 14 Maret 1741 atas permintaan penguasa monarki Habsburg Maria Theresia yang menginginkan pendirian sebuah teater yang terletak di sebelah istananya. Anaknya, Kaisar Joseph II, menjuluki teater ini "Teater Nasional Jerman" pada tahun 1776. Tiga opera Mozart ditayangkan untuk pertama kalinya di tempat ini: Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1782), Le nozze di Figaro (1786) dan Così fan tutte (1790). Semenjak tahun 1794, teater ini disebut "K.K. Hoftheater nächst der Burg". Simfoni Pertama Beethoven juga dimainkan untuk pertama kalinya di gedung ini pada 2 April 1800. Karya terakhir yang dipentaskan di gedung Burgtheater lama adalah Iphigenie auf Tauris karya Goethe pada tahun 1888.
    Gedung lama Burgtheater terhubung dengan Hofburg di Michaelerplatz di seberang Gereja Santo Mikael. Teater ini lalu dipindah ke bangunan baru di Ringstraße pada tanggal 14 Oktober 1888; gedung ini dirancang oleh Gottfried Semper dan Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer.
    Pada tahun 1943, pada masa kekuasaan Nazi, drama The Merchant of Venice dipentaskan di Burgtheater. Peran Shylock yang menunjukkan stereotip-stereotip antisemit dimainkan oleh Werner Krauss.
    Pada tanggal 12 Maret 1945, Burgtheater mengalami kerusakan berat akibat serangan bom dari udara, dan satu bulan kemudian (pada tanggal 12 April 1945) gedung ini semakin rusak akibat kebakaran. Setelah berakhirnya Perang Dunia II, teater ini direstorasi dari tahun 1953 hingga 1955.
