    Cats adalah sandiwara musikal yang diciptakan oleh Andrew Lloyd Webber berdasarkan Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats dan puisi-puisi lain oleh T. S. Eliot. Sandiwara musikal ini telah dipentaskan di berbagai negara dan diterjemahkan ke lebih dari 20 bahasa. Cats pertama dipentaskan di West End, New London Theatre, pada 11 Mei 1981, disutradarai oleh Trevor Nunn. Setelah 8.949 pertunjukan di London, musikal ini ditutup pada ulang tahunnya ke-21, 11 Mei 2002, memegang rekor musical yang dipentaskan paling lama sampai rekor ini dipecahkan pada 8 Oktober 2006 oleh Les Miserables.     Sejarah pementasan


    Cats pertama kali dipentaskan pada tanggal 11 Mei 1981 di Teater New London yang terletak di West End, London. Pada awalnya, musikal ini diproduksi di atas panggung oleh produser Cameron Mackintosh dan dibawakan grup The Really Useful Theatre Company milik Lloyd Webber. Trevor Nunn bertindak sebagai sutradara, sedangkan asisten sutradara dan koreografer adalah Gillian Lynne. Desain dipercayakan kepada John Napier, dan tata lampu oleh David Hersey. Pementasan Cats di London bertahan selama 21 tahun, dengan total pementasan sebanyak 8.949 kali. Pementasan terakhir berlangsung pada hari jadi Cats ke-21, 11 Mei 2002, dan disiarkan langsung ke layar besar di Taman Covent bagi penggemar yang kehabisan tiket. Musikal Cats memegang rekor sebagai pementasan sandiwara musikal yang paling lama bertahan hingga dipecahkan Les Misérables, 8 Oktober 2006.
    Cats dibawa ke Amerika Serikat, dan dipentaskan untuk pertama kalinya di Broadway pada tanggal 7 Oktober 1982. Pementasan dilakukan di Teater Winter Garden oleh tim produksi yang pernah mementaskan Cats di London. Pada 19 Juni 1997, Cats telah dipentaskan 6.138 kali pementasan di Broadway, dan menjadi pementasan musikal paling tahan lama dalam sejarah Broadway. Hingga pertunjukan terakhir di Broadway, 10 September 2000, Cats dipentaskan sebanyak 7.485 kali. Rekor jumlah pementasan yang dicapai Cats ternyata dipecahkan sandiwara musikal The Phantom of the Opera yang juga ditulis oleh Andrew Lloyd Webber.
    Pada tahun 1998, Andrew Lloyd Webber memproduksi Cats untuk direkam dan diedarkan dalam pita video. Peran utama dipercayakan kepada Elaine Paige (memerankan Grizabella di London), Ken Page (memerankan Old Deuteronomy di Broadway), Sir John Mills sebagai Gus, Michael Gruber sebagai Munkustrap, John Partridge sebagai The Rum Tum Tugger, dan sejumlah besar penari dan penyanyi yang pernah mengikuti mementaskan Cats di atas panggung. Video Cats disutradarai oleh David Mallet dengan koreografi oleh Gillian Lynne. Setelah selesai, video Cats dirilis dalam format DVD dan VHS, serta disiarkan oleh sejumlah jaringan televisi.
