Chemena Kamali ( chə-MI-na kə-MAL-i) (born 1981) is a fashion designer. She became the creative director of fashion brand Chloé in 2023.
Early life and education
Kamali was born to Tony, an Iranian architect, and Monika Kamali, a German hairdresser; she was named after Sophia Loren's character in the film El Cid. (She is not related to Norma Kamali.) She grew up in Dortmund. Her family moved to Laguna Beach when she was 11 and later returned to Germany.
Kamali studied garment construction at the University of Trier, during which time she interned at Chloé during Phoebe Philo's tenure. She studied for an MA at Central Saint Martins under Louise Wilson.
Career
Kamali worked at Alberta Ferretti and then Strenesse before returning to Chloé. From 2016, she worked for Yves Saint Laurent. She then worked for Frame.
In 2023, Kamali was invited to take the Directorship of Chloé, following from Gabriela Hearst.
In 2024, several outfits designed by Kamali were worn by Kamala Harris. A "coconut brown" pantsuit worn by Harris on Day 1 of the 2024 Democratic National Convention received particular media attention, with commentators suggesting the color was a reference to Barack Obama's infamous tan suit, or perhaps Harris's own "coconut" meme.
Personal life
Kamali is married to management consultant Konstantin Wehrum, whom she met at a college party. The two live in Paris with their two children.
