Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) NYSE: CME, didirikan pada tahun 1848, adalah bursa berjangka tertua didunia . Lebih dari 50 opsi dan kontrak berjangka yang berbagai ragam diperdagangkan disini oleh lebih dari 3.600 anggota bursa baik pada lantai perdagangan bursa maupun dengan menggunakan sistem perdagangan elektronik. Pada tanggal 12 Juli 2007, CBOT melakukan penggabungan usaha atau merger dengan CME .
Sejarah
Keprihatinan dari para pedagang di Amerika untuk memastikan bahwa akan ada pembeli dan penjual komoditi telah melahirkan suatu kontrak berjangka dalam perdagangan komoditas. Namun risiko kredit merupakan suatu permasalahan yang serius maka dibentuklah CBOT yang merupakan pusat perdagangan dimana para pembeli dan penjual dapat bertemu dan melakukan negosiasi serta MEMBUAT kontrak berjangka SECARA RESMI.
Pada tahun 1864, CBOT mendaftarkan standardisasi perdagangan berjangka yang pertama yang dikenal dengan nama kontrak berjangka . Dan pada tahun 1919, "Chicago Butter and Egg Board", suatu lembaga yang merupakan pemisahan dari CBOT, reorganisasi untuk memungkinkan para anggota bursa melakukan perdagangan berjangka dan akhirnya namanya berubah menjadi Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME).
Pada tanggal 19 October 2005, dilakukan penawaran umum perdana (IPO) atas 3.191.489 saham CBOT dengan harga 54.00 (USD) per saham. Pada hari pertama perdagangannya di bursa NYSE, harga saham CBOT langsung melejit sebantak 49% menjadi 80,50 per sahamnya .
Pada tahun 2007, CBOT dan CME merger untuk membentuk "CME Group".
Bangunan gedung
Sejak tahun 1930, "Chicago Board of Trade" terletak di 141 West Jackson Boulevard, Chicago. Bangunan tersebut didesain oleh arsitek "Holabird & Roche" dengan tinggi 605 kaki atau 184m, yang merupakan gedung tertinggi di Chicago hingga munculnya bangunan yang lebih tinggi pada tahun 1965 yaitu gedung Richard J. Daley Center. Bangunan Art Deco ini merupakan karya seni ukir dari "Alvin Meyer" yang diatasnya terdapat patung dewi Ceres. Patung dewi Ceres ini tidak memiliki raut wajah oleh karena pemahatnya yang bernama John Storrs, meyakini bahwa bangunan tersebut cukup tinggi dibandinbgkan gedung-gedung disekitarnya sehingga dengan demikian tidak akan ada kemungkinan bahwa wajah patung tersebut dapat dilihat orang.
Pada tanggal 4 Mei 1977, Chicago Board of Trade Building ditetapkan sebagai Chicago Landmark, dan kini dinyatakan sebagai gedung bersejarah nasional.
Lantai bursa
Lantai bursa yang strukturnya berbentuk oktagonal dimana pada lantai poerdagangan tersebut terdapat sekat-sekat pemisah ruangan sehingga menjadi seperti kotak yang disebut "(pit)"
Anak tangga naik yang terletak di sisi luar dari oktagon dan tangga turun yang terletak di sis dalam oktagon membuat tampilan "pit" di CBOT menyerupai amphitheater yang dapat ditempati oleh ratusan pedagang yang dapat saling melihat dan mendengar satu sama lainnya selama perdagangan berlangsung.

Pada tanggal 22 Oktober, 1981, perdagangan di CBOT dan di Philadelphia Stock Exchange dihentikan setelah seorang penelpon gelap mengatakan bahwa pada bangunan tersebut telah diletakkan bom.
Pada tanggal 11 Agustus, 2006, CBOT meluncurkan kontrak berjangka pertanian untuk diperdagangkan secara bersamaan.
Pada tanggal 17 Oktober, 2006, "Chicago Mercantile Exchange" mengumumkan pembelian saham Chicago Board of Trade dengan harga 8 miliar USD, menggabungkan kedua lembaga keuangan besar ini sebagai CME Group, Inc. CBOT saat ini menggunakan platform teknologi dengan tenaga luar, tetapi akan segera digantikan dengan sistem perdagangan "CME Globex" .
Pada tanggal 9 Juli, 2007 pemegang saham CBOT menyetujui rencana penggabungan (merger) dengan Chicago Mercantile Exchange "dan menghasilkan suatu pasar derivatif yang terbesar dalam sejarah."
