Chukwu adalah keberadaan tertinggi dalam agama Igbo. Chukwu merupakan sumber semua dewa-dewi Igbo dan bertanggung jawab memberikan tugas khusus kepada masing-masing dewa/dewi. Suku Igbo percaya bahwa semua hal berasal dari Chukwu; ia menurunkan hujan yang dibutuhkan oleh tumbuhan dan mengendalikan semua yang ada di Bumi dan dunia spiritual. Mereka percaya bahwa Chukwu maha kuasa, tidak dapat didefinisikan dan mencakup semuanya yang ada di ruang waktu.
Penelitian bahasa menunjukkan bahwa nama "Chukwu" atau "Chukouuee" terdiri dari dua kata dalam bahasa Igbo, "Chi" ("keberadaan spiritual") dan "Ukwu" ("besar dalam ukuran").
Konsep Chukwu
Menurut suku Igbo, Chukwu adalah pencipta dunia dan semua yang baik bersama dengan hujan, pohon dan tumbuhan-tumbuhan lainnya. Chukwu adalah dewa tertinggi yang dilambangkan oleh matahari. Dewa ini tidak digambarkan dalam wujud manusia dalam kepercayaan tradisional Igbo. Akan tetapi, Chukwu diduga merupakan dewa maskulin.
Banyak orang Igbo Kristen yang juga menyebut Tuhan dengan nama "Chukwu". Suku Igbo percaya bahwa manusia tidak dapat membayangkan kekuatan Chukwu yang tidak terbatas. Banyak dialek Igbo yang menyebut Tuhan dengan nama "Chukwu", "Chiokike", atau "Obasi."
Terdapat lima aspek Chukwu:

Anyanwu - arti simbolis matahari. Matahari menyinari semua sehingga Chukwu merupakan sumber pengetahuan dan pembuat semua pengetahuan
Agbala - kesuburan di Bumi, rakyatnya, dan dunia spiritual yang dipenuhi dewa-dewi
Chi - dewa-dewi yang berperan sebagai pemandu pribadi dan spiritual
Okike - pencipta hukum-hukum yang memerintah makhluk kasatmata dan tidak kasatmata.
