    Coelurosauria merupakan sebuah klad yang mewakili semua dinosaurus theropoda yang lebih terkait dengan burung daripada carnosaurus.
    Klad ini merupakan kelompok yang sangat beragam, yang meliputi tyrannosaurus, ornitomimosauria, compsognathid, dan maniraptora, yang mencakup burung, yang mewakili satu-satunya anggota dari coelurosauria yang masih hidup hingga saat ini. Kemungkinan besar semua anggota coelurosaurus memiliki bulu.

    Anggota dari coelurosaurus memiliki ciri karakteristik berupa lengan yang panjang dengan pergelangan kaki mirip engsel yang sudah berkembang dengan baik. Fitur tubuh tersebut kemudian hilang atau termodifikasi oleh jenis coelurosaurus yang lebih baru (sebagai contoh, burung).
    Peningkatan pada proporsi cerebrum pada otak tampaknya muncul pada klad ini, dan "berlanjut selama evolusi maniraptora dan burung awal".


    Sejarah fosil


    Beberapa fosil jejak dari Coelurosauria tertua berasal dari Trias Akhir. Contoh yang mungkin, namun belum dikonfirmasi, merupakan sebuah jejak dari archosaurus Protoavis. Apa yang ditemukan diantara waktu diatas dan awal dari Periode Jura merupakan sisa-sisa yang tak lengkap (fragmentary).
    Banyak fosil hampir lengkap dari coelurosauria diketahui dari kala Jura Akhir. Archaeopteryx diketahui dari gamping Solnhofen yang berasal dari 155-150 juta tahun lalu. Ornitholestes, spesimen troodontid WDC DML 110, Coelurus fragilis dan Tanycolagreus topwilsoni semuanya diketahui dari Formasi Morrison di Wyoming yang berasal dari 150 juta tahun lalu. Epidendrosaurus dan Pedopenna diketahui dari Batuan Daohugou di Cina, yang usianya masih diperdebatkan, namun berkisar antara 160 atau 145 juta tahun lalu.
    Beragamnya fosil dari Jura Akhir beserta dengan bukti morfologi menyatakan bahwa diferensiasi anggota coelurosaurus selesai sebelum akhir Jura.
    Pada kala Kapur Awal, fosil coelurosauria dengan jumlah besar (termasuk burung) diketahui dari Formasi Yixian di Liaoning. Semua dinosaurus theropoda yang diketahui dari formasi tersebut merupakan aggota dari klad ini. Banyak dari garis keturunan coelurosaurus selamat hingga akhir periode Kapur, namun kebanyakan dari mereka punah pada peristiwa kepunahan K-Pg. Neornithes merupakan satu-satunya anggota dari klad ini yang selamat, yang nantinya akan berdiversifikasi menjadi beragam bentuk yang dapat dilihat saat ini.
    Ada sebuah konsensus diantara paleontolog bahwa burung merupakan keturunan dari coelurosaurus. Burung diklasifikasikan sebagai anggota dari sub-kelompok Maniraptora.
