Latar belakang
Conversations with Friends diselesaikan saat Rooney masih belajar menulis dan menyelesaikan gelar masternya dalam sastra Amerika. Novel ini menjadi subjek lelang tujuh pihak untuk hak penerbitannya. Rights were eventually sold in 12 countries.

Alur cerita
Di Dublin, dua mahasiswa Frances (narator) dan sahabat sekaligus mantan pacarnya, Bobbi, menarik perhatian Melissa, seorang penulis esai dan fotografer berusia akhir 30-an, saat Frances dan Bobbi tampil membacakan puisi.
