D adalah huruf keempat dalam alfabet Latin. Dalam bahasa Indonesia disebut de (dibaca ˈde), sedangkan dalam bahasa Melayu disebut di (dibaca ˈdiː). Dalam bahasa Latin dan bahasa Indonesia, huruf ini melambangkan fonem /d/, yeowtr rongga-gigi bersuara.




Sejarah



Huruf Semit Dâlet kemungkinan besar berkembang dari logogram yang bermakna "ikan" atau "pintu". Terdapat berbagai hieroglif Mesir yang mungkin mengilhaminya. Dalam bahasa Semit, Yunani Kuno, dan Latin, huruf ini melambangkan konsonan /d/; dalam huruf Etruska pula huruf ini seolah-olah tidak diperlukan, tetapi masih dilestarikan (lihat huruf B). Huruf Yunani yang setara dengannya adalah: Δ (besar) atau δ (kecil) (Delta).
Bentuk huruf kecil "d", yang terdiri dari satu lekukan dan satu garis vertikal yang tinggi, berkembang dari perubahan bervariasi pada bentuk huruf besar "D". Dalam penulisan pada zaman dahulu adalah suatu kelaziman untuk memulai lekukan pada kiri garis vertikal, sehingga menghasilkan suatu serif di atas lekukan itu. Serif ini disambung manakala bagian lain huruf ini dikurangi, menghasilkan suatu tangkai bersudut dan lengkungan. Kemudian tangkai bersudut ini berubah menjadi tangkai vertikal.




Penggunaan


Dalam kebanyakan bahasa yang memakai alfabet Latin, huruf d melambangkan bunyi /d/, tetapi dalam alfabet bahasa Vietnam, huruf ini dibaca /z/ di utara dan /j/ (seperti "y" dalam "ya") di selatan.
Dalam bahasa Jerman, huruf d berbunyi /d/ (konsonan letup rongga-gigi bersuara), tetapi berubah menjadi /t/ (konsonan letup rongga-gigi tak bersuara) jika di akhir kata.
Dalam bahasa Fiji, huruf ini melambangkan konsonan hambat pranasal /nd/.
Dalam beberapa bahasa yang mana konsonan hambat tak bersuara tanpa hembusan berlawanan dengan konsonan hambat tak bersuara berhembusan, d melambangkan /t/ tanpa hembusan, sementara t juga berbunyi /tʰ/ berhembusan. Contoh-contoh bahasa berkenaan meliputi bahasa Islandia, Bahasa Gaelik Skotlandia, bahasa Navajo, dan alih aksara pinyin untuk bahasa Mandarin.
Dalam angka Romawi, D memiliki nilai 500, berasal dari setengah ↀ (bernilai 1000; tetapi di kemudian hari, M dipakai sebagai lambang 1000), sehingga D berarti 500 (angka) atau tahun 500.
