Damar (bahasa Inggris: Dammar gum) adalah hasil sekresi (getah atau gum) dari pohon Shorea sp., Vatica sp., Dryobalanops sp., dan lain-lain dari suku meranti-merantian atau Dipterocarpaceae. Di dalamnya termasuk damar mata kucing dan damar gelap. Damar dimanfaatkan dalam pembuatan korek api (untuk mencegah api membakar kayu terlalu cepat), plastik, plester, vernis, dan lak. Getah damar merupakan resin triterpenoid, mengandung banyak triterpene dan hasil oksidasinya. Banyak di antaranya merupakan senyawa dengan berat molekul rendah (dammarane, asam damarenolat, oleanane, asam oleanonat, dll.), tetapi damar juga mengandung suatu fraksi polimer, yang tersusun dari polycadinene.




Penggunaan


Damar digunakan dalam makanan, sebagai pembuat keruh (clouding agent) atau pembuat mengkilap (glazing agent, dan dalam kemenyan, vernis, dan produk-produk lain. "Vernis damar" (Dammar varnish), terbuat dari getah damar yang dicampur dengan terpentin, diperkenalkan sebagai vernis gambar pada tahun 1826, biasanya dipakai dalam lukisan minyak, baik dalam proses pembuatan lukisan maupun setelah lukisan selesai.
Kristal damar juga dilarutkan dalam molten malam parafin untuk membuat batik, guna mencegah malam meretak ketika dilukiskan pada sutra atau rayon.
Namanya dalam bahasa Indonesia atau bahasa Melayu berarti "resin" atau "obor yang dibuat dari resin".
Ada dua jenis lain dari damar, selain getah damar:

Mata kucing merupakan resin kristalin, biasanya dalam bentuk bola-bola bulat.
Batu berbentuk kelereng, damar berwarna keruh (opaque) yang dikumpulkan dari tanah.
